Cold war is a period of power rivalry, tensions and series of confrontations between Russia and USA backed by their respective allies.

The period saw arms race as well as arms control. Reasons are : -

1. Both blocks were in security dilemma that if they stop developing arms and ammunition, the balance of power would shift to the other side.

2. Arms race was intensified under the apprehension that other party is also secretly developing weapons.

3. Wars fought in other parts of the world such as Vietnam, Cuba of direct confrontation between the rival blocks.

However, simultaneous arms control treaty were also signed. Reasons were: -

1. As both the countries were nuclear powered, it was realized that any nuclear war would destroy both the countries.

2. It was also to build confidence among both nations, and resolve the security dilemma.

3. to prevent Unnecessary diversion of resources into developing weapon,
