In physics, a force is any interaction that, when unopposed, will change the motion of an object. A force can cause an object with mass to change its velocity, i.e., to accelerate. Force can also be described intuitively as a push or a pull. A force has both magnitude and direction, making it a vector quantity.

Force:-

Force is an external agent capable of changing the state of rest or motion of a particular body. It has a magnitude and a direction. The direction towards which the force is applied is known as the direction of the force and the application of force is the point where force is applied.

Effects of Force:-

  • Force can make a body that is at rest to move.
  • It can stop a moving body or slow it down.
  • It can accelerate the speed of a moving body.
  • It can also change the direction of a moving body along with its shape and size.
  • It can change the shape and size of an object.

Formula for Force:-

The quantity of force is expressed by the vector product of mass (m) and acceleration (a). The equation or the formula for force can mathematically be expressed in the form of: F=m×a where

  • m is mass.
  • a is acceleration.

Types of Force:-

Force is a physical cause that can change the state of motion or the dimensions of an object. There are two types of forces based on their applications:

  • Contact Force
  • Non-Contact Force

Unit of Force:-

  • In the centimeter gram second system of unit (CGS unit) force is expressed in dyne.
  • In the standard international system of unit (SI unit) it is expressed in Newton (N).

Some examples of force are:

  • Gravitational force
  • Electric force
  • Magnetic force
  • Nuclear force
  • Frictional force
