The Revolt of 1857 also called the Uprising or Sepoy Mutiny by the British but the Indians call it the First War of Independence as it is the first time that all the sections of the society United and fought together to overcame obstacles and to throw off shackles of foreign domination. It was the landmark in the history of India's struggle for freedom which started on May 10,1857 with the mutiny of soldiers in Meerut Cantonment. The leadership of Revolt was taken by the aged Mughal Emeperor Bahadur Shah. He was proclaimed the Shahenshah-e-Hindustan.
The Revolt was started by the Indian soldiers in the service of East India Company, soon it spread to almost every part of country. All the sections of the society participated in event. Hindus and Muslims also came together to oppose the foreign domination.
The only aim of British was to exploit the resources of country. They won almost every battle with the Indian rulers. This is what angered the Indians and finally they United together to fight against this exploitation and led the revolt.

Result of Revolt :
The Revolt broke out before the appointed date and there was no unity among the rebels which led to the failure of the revolt. There were other reasons too.
By the end, British authority was re-establish in India and the revolt proved to be the first ever greatest struggle for freedom. It became the source of Inspiration for the freedom strugglers and the citizens of India.
And with the control of Delhi and imprisonment of Bahadur Shah Zafar they captured the Lucknow, killed Rani Lakshmi Bai, Tantya Tope, blowed Kashmiri Gate, Bahadur Shah Zafar II was exiled to Rangoon.
Thus, Ended the episode of the historic Revolt, Revolt of 1857 or FIRST WAR OF INDEPENDENCE.
