Help!!!!!!!!!!(again) Need answer quick timed test!
Carina spent a total of $5.27 buying a pineapple for $3.40 and some tomatoes that were on sale for $0.85 per pound. To determine the number of pounds of tomatoes that she bought, x, Carina wrote and solved the equation as shown below.
3.40 + 0.85 x = 5.27.
0.85 x = 8.67.
x = 10.2 pounds.
Where, if anywhere, did Carina make an error?
Carina did not make any errors.
The initial equation that Carina wrote was incorrect.
Carina should have subtracted 3.40 from 5.27.
Carina should have divided 8.67 by 0.85.

Correct Question -

Carina spent a total of $5.27 buying a pineapple for $3.40 and some tomatoes that were on sale for $0.85 per pound.

To determine the number of pounds of tomatoes that she bought, x, Carina wrote and solved the equation as shown below -

3.40 + 0.85 x = 5.27

0.85 x = 8.67

x = 10.2 pounds.

Where, if anywhere, did Carina make an error?

Options -

(A) Carina did not make any errors.

(B) The initial equation that Carina wrote was incorrect.

(C) Carina should have subtracted 3.40 from 5.27.

(D) Carina should have divided 8.67 by 0.85.

Answer:

The answer is option ( C) , Catherine should have subtracted 3.40 from 5.27 .

Step-by-step explanation:

The total amount spent by Carina is $ 5.27 .

She bought pineapples @ $ 3.40 and tomatoes @ $ 0.85 per pound .

Assuming that she bought x pounds of tomatoes -

The required equation will be :

> 0.85 x + 3.40 = 5.27

Till this part she did everything correct .

The next step should be -

> 0.85 x = 5.27 - 3.40

Instead she added these numbers.

Doing so, she got the amount of tomatoes as 10.2 pounds which is not possible !

The correct answer is Option (C) .

This is the required answer !

Answer:

Correct Question :-

  • Carina spent a total of $5.27 buying a pineapple for $3.40 and some tomatoes that were on sale for $0.85 per pound. To determine the number of pounds of tomatoes that she bought x. Carina wrote and solved the equation as shown below.

3.40 + 0.85 x = 5.27

0.85 x = 8.67

x = 10.2 pounds

Where, if anywhere, did Carina make an error ?

Option :

  • (1) Carina did not make any errors
  • (2) The initial equation that Carina wrote was incorrect.
  • (3) Carina should have subtracted 3.40 from 5.27.
  • (4) Carina should have divided 8.67 by 0.85.

Solution :-

Given :

  • Carina spent a total of $5.27
  • She buy pineapple for $3.40
  • Some tomatoes that were on sale for $0.85.

According to the question,

3.40 + 0.85x = 5.27

0.85 x = 5.27 - 3.40

Here, Carina did a mistake, she have to subtract this number instead of doing subtraction she add the number.

0.85x = 1.87

x = 187 × 100/85 × 100

x = 187/85

x = 2.2

If, Carina subtract 3.40 from 5.27 and then divide 1.87 by 0.85, then she will get $2.2 for the price of tomatoes she bought from the market.

Hence, the correct options is option no (3) Carina should subtracted 3.40 from 5.27.
