Answer:

let total votes be x

votes for divya=D

votes for rakhi=R

votes for divya - votes for rakhi=.12x--------1

votes for divya + votes for rakhi=x----------2

subtracting 1 from 2

2(votes for rakhi)=.88x

2×132000=.88x

264000=.88x

x=264000/.88=300000

votes received by Divya=300000-132000=168000

election was won by=D-R=168000-132000=36000 votes

so option C is correct.

First let's calculate what percentage of votes each party got. if D got 12% more than R, it means that if I subtract 12% of votes from D they both would have the same amount of votes so :

D - 12 = R \\ D = R +  12  \: percent \\D + R = 100 \: percent \\ (R + 12 \: percent) + R = 100 \: percent \\ 2R + 12 \: percent = 100 \: percent \\ 2R = 88 \: percent \\ R = 44 \: percent \:  \\ D = 44 \: percent  + 12 \: percent = 56 \: percent

So 132000 votes is 44% and we need to know how much is 12%. One of the ways we can do this is dividing 132000 by 44 so we know what 1% is and then multiply that by 12. That gives us :

 \frac{132000}{44}  = 3000 \\  \\ 3000 \: . \: 12 = 36000

Note - Percent = %
