Answer:

Roots are the values of x, that satisfy the given equation.

Your main motive here is to eliminate all the plus or minus signs and replace them with multiplications.

a)

3x² - 27 = 0

Taking x common

=> 3(x² - 9) = 0

- 9, you see, can be also written as (x + 3)(x - 3)

=> 3(x + 3)(x - 3) = 0

[ Got them in multiplication, now see Magic! ]

If two variables multiply to give a zero, then we conclude that either one of them is zero.

So,

  • either (x + 3) = 0

=> x = - 3

  • or (x - 3) = 0

=> x = 3

The value of the equation is zero when x = 3 and also when x = -3, hence, we got the roots of the equation – 3 and -3.

Similarly,

b)

x² - 11x = 0

=> x(x - 11) = 0

  • Either

x = 0

  • or

x = 11

Hence, the roots – 0, 11.
