\sf\large\red{\underline{\underline{Question:}}}

  • Find the value of x and y if : 3\left[\begin{array}{cc}5&-6\\4&x\end{array}\right] -\left[\begin{array}{cc}6&y\\0&6\end{array}\right] =3\left[\begin{array}{cc}3&-2\\4&0\end{array}\right]

\sf\large\red{\underline{\underline{Solution:}}}

We have ,

\green\longmapsto 3\left[\begin{array}{cc}5&-6\\4&x\end{array}\right] -\left[\begin{array}{cc}6&y\\0&6\end{array}\right] =3\left[\begin{array}{cc}3&-2\\4&0\end{array}\right]

\green\dashrightarrow\left[\begin{array}{cc}15&-18\\12&3x\end{array}\right] -\left[\begin{array}{cc}6&y\\0&6\end{array}\right] =\left[\begin{array}{cc}9&-6\\12&0\end{array}\right]

Adding matrices :

\green\dashrightarrow\left[\begin{array}{cc}9&-y-18\\12&3x+6\end{array}\right]  =\left[\begin{array}{cc}9&-6\\12&0\end{array}\right]

Comparing both matrices :

\green\dashrightarrow\left[\begin{array}{cc}9&\blue{-y-18}\\12&\pink{3x+6}\end{array}\right]  =\left[\begin{array}{cc}9&\blue {-6}\\12&\pink{0}\end{array}\right]

\sf\longmapsto -y-18=-6

\sf\dashrightarrow y = -12

___________

\sf\longmapsto 3x-6=0

\sf\dashrightarrow x=2

\sf\large\red{\underline{\underline{Therefore,}}}

  • The value of x is 2 and y is -12
