Required answer:-
1) Sponge is compressible due to the presence of air in the minute holes. Hence, sponge can be compressed easily although other solids are incompressible. Answer: A sponge has minute holes,in which air is trapped, when we press it,the air is expelled out and we are able to compress it.
2) The pressure exerted by a gas is due to the random motion of particles in the gas. Gases have weak intermolecular forces and the particles in continuous random motion and these particles collide with the walls of the container. These collisions with the walls of the container exerts pressure on the gas.
3) The characteristics of particles of matter are:
i) All matter is composed of very small particles which can exist independently.
ii) Particles of matter have spaces between them.
iii) Particles of matter are continuously moving.
iv)Particles of matter attract each other.
