Answer:

x = 2

y = –1

Step-by-step explanation:

Given :

  • The product of a number (x) and 8 increased by the product of 5 and another number (y) is equal to 11.
  • The difference between those 2 number is equal to 3.

To find :

the two numbers

Solution :

The product of a number (x) and 8 increased by the product of 5 and another number (y) is equal to 11.

8x + 5y = 11 --(1)

The difference between those 2 number is equal to 3.

x – y = 3

x = 3 + y --(2)

Substitute x = (3+y) in equation (1),

8(3 + y) + 5y = 11

24 + 8y + 5y = 11

13y = 11 – 24

13y = –13

y = –13/13

y = –1

Substitute y = –1,

x = 3 + (–1)

x = 3 – 1

x = 2

Therefore,

the value of x is '2'

the value of y is '–1'
