first of all let us know what are prepositions,

Prepositions often describe the position of something, the time when something happens or the way in which something is done. ... In general, because they are links, prepositions belong in the middle of sentences, rather than at the end. The table below shows some examples of how prepositions are used in sentences.

There are about 150 prepositions in English. Yet this is a very small number when you think of the thousands of other words (nouns, verbs etc). Prepositions are important words. We use individual prepositions more frequently than other individual words.

Where do we use prepositions?

Prepositions are always used to indicate the relationship of a noun or phrase to something else. When using a preposition, you must always have the subject and verb before it, and follow it with a noun. You should never follow it with a verb !

Some examples of common prepositions used in sentences are:

  •     He sat on the chair.
  •    There is some milk in the fridge.
  •    She was hiding under the table.
  •    The cat jumped off the counter.
  •    He drove over the bridge.
  •    She lost her ring at the beach.
  •    The book belongs to Anthony.
  •    They were sitting by the tree.
