First we need to square the equation on both the sides

(x+\frac{1}{x} )^{2} =(5)^{2}

then we get

x^{2} +\frac{1}{x^{2} } +2=25

then when you transpose 2 to RHS you get 23.

Therefore,

x^{2} +\frac{1}{x^{2} } =23

Solution :

******†****************************

We know the algebraic identity:

a² + 2ab + b² = ( a + b )²

Or

a² + b² = ( a + b )² - 2ab

************************************

Here ,

x + 1/x = 5 -----( 1 )

x² + 1/x²

= ( x + 1/x )² - 2 * x * 1/x

= 5² - 2 [ from ( 1 ) ]

= 25 - 2

= 23
