The Milk sample was illuminated, because it is a colloid, which undergoes a phenomenon called "Tyndall effect"

The same does not happen with salt solution, because, salt dissolves in water and its particles are not large enough to scatter light when passed, thus, not forming the Tyndall effect

Other solutions instead of milk are: Starch solution and soap solution
