Hey this may help you.

There are 23 pair of chromosomes out of which one pair is called sex chromosome.Women have a perfect pair of sex chromosome, both X but men have mismatch pair in which one is normal sized X while other is short one Y. So women are XX while men are XY .

The number of chromosomes remain same in the next progeny because multicellular organism have special lineages of cells in specialised organs which have only half the number of chromosomes and half the number of DNA as compared to the non reproductive body cells. Thus, when these germ cells from two individuals combine during sexual replroduction to form a new individual,it results in re-establishment of the number of chromosomes and the DNA content in the new generation.
