A cylinder fitted with a piston contains a gas at a pressure P. The section
cross section of the piston is 10 cm2. The piston moves inwards 1mm. The work required
to move the piston is 0.035 cal. Find the pressure P in atmospheres.

ANSWER
As this is an adiabatic process, when the piston is suddenly pushed in, work is done on the gas, but it does not get enough time to reach equilibrium with its surroundings. In equilibrium it will be at the same temperature as surrounding which is lower than the temperature just before compression.
∴ as temperature decreases and volume is constant, pressure also decrease.
