3. contraction of the protoplast of a plant cell as a result of loss of water from the cell. Plasmolysis is the process by which the cytoplasm of the cell gets shrinked due to the loss of water by osmosis. When a plasmolysed cell is places in water, the cell absorbs water from outside due to difference in solute concentration inside and outside the cell. By absorbing water the cell becomes turgid.
