Answer:

Fora SHM the PE of the particle is zero at equilibrium position where KE is maximum. Again at the extreme positions for displacement =+a or -a ,the KE of the particle is zero it has got maximum PE. Hence displacement between these two points is +a or -a , where a is the amplitude of the SHM.

Solution : +a

Explanation

Expression of kinetic energy is

K = 1/2 k ( a^2 - x^2 ) _[i]

Expression of potential energy is

U = 1/2 kx^2 _[ii]

Where, k = mω^2

where we observe that at mean position ( x = 0) Kinetic energy is maximum [ 1/2 ka^2 ] and the potential energy is maximum (zero).also at extreme position ( x = + a ), kinetic energy is zero and potential energy is maximum [ 1/2 ka^2 ]

Thus displacement between position of maximum potential energy and maximum kinetic energy is +a.

NOTE

kinetic energy is zero at extreme position but potential energy is mean position need not be 0. It is minimum at mean position.

∴ Option b is the correct answer !
