Question

  • Ritu can row downstream 20 km in 2 hours, and upstream 4 km in 2 hours. Find her speed of rowing in still water and the speed of the current.

↓✪■■Solution■■✪

Let, speed of Ritu in still water be x km/hr and speed of current be y km/hr.

Then:

→The speed of downstream = (x+y) km/hr

→The speed of upstream = (x-y) km/hr

We know that:

time =  \frac{distane}{speed}

Therefore we'll get two fractions:

 \frac{20}{x + y}  = 2  \: and \:  \frac{4}{x - y} =2

From this we'll get two equations:

  • x+y=10-------(i)
  • x-y=2--------(ii)

Adding both the equation, we get:

  • x=6

After putting the value of x in equation (i), we get:

  • y=6

Hence the speed of Ritu in still water is 6 km/hr and speed in the current is 4 km/hr.
