Let the number of hours that had passed be x.

The hours remaining is 1/4 of this.

Hence hours left = 1/4x

The sum of this gives us the total hours per day.

That is :

Total hours per day = hours passed + hours left

Writing this we have :

x + 1/4x = 40

1.25x = 40

x = 40/1.25

x = 32

Hours left in the day :

40 - 32 = 8 hours

= 8 hrs
