Carbon dioxide extinguishes work by displacing oxygen, or taking away the oxygen element of the fire triangle. The carbon dioxide is also very cold as it comes out of the extinguisher, so it cools the fuel as well.

CO2 is a non-combustible gas and extinguishes fire in two ways:

1. Since it is heavier than oxygen, it covers the fire like a blanket and cut offs the contact between fuel and oxygen.

2. In cylinders, CO2 is kept in the liquid form. When released, it expands enormously and cools down. This brings down the fuel, which helps in controlling the fire.
