Henry has 24 pieces of candy that he wants to give to his two sons. The oldest is to get three times as much as the youngest. How many pieces of candy will the oldest son receive?

No. of candies = 24

No. of candies the younger son gets = x ( since it is not known let it be "x" )

No. of candies oldest son gets = 3 times x

                                                   = 3x

Hence , the number of candies the oldest son gets is 3x

If the number of candies the younger son gets is given for example , X = 10 , then

No. of candies the younger son gets = 10

No. of candies oldest son gets = 3 times the no. of candies the younger son  

                                                       gets

                                                    = 3 x 10

                                                     = 30
