Answer:

This line is from the chapter The Address by Marga Minco. When the narrator returned to her city after the war ended, she went to Mrs. Dorling’s house to take her mother’s belongings back. Mrs. Dorling did not receive her warmly. First of all she pretended to have not recognized her; but when the narrator gave her a few hints, she recognized her.

Mrs. Dorling did not open the door because she did not want the narrator to come inside her house and see all her mother’s belongings such as cutlery, sliver, crockery, antique things, etc. She had no intention of returning these things to her. That’s why she tried to send her away from the door. Mrs. Dorling was not happy to receive the narrator. The narrator felt bad at the cold reception. So, she went away.

Explanation:

Obviously, the woman was pretending that she didn’t recognize the narrator. As soon as she realized that she has been found out she said, “Have you come back ? I thought that no one had come back.”
