How will you react to anyone’s decision to keep you in prison? I know most of you will fight tooth and nail to maintain your freedom. I ask then why are animals kept in confinement in the name of zoos? As man loves freedom, so do all forms of animals. Man has kept animals in zoos for his pleasure, entertainment and convenience. This is man’s cruelty to animals! Have animals ever encroached into man’s world and hunted him? Has any animal ever encaged any man? If man were treated with the same cruelty, how would he feel? Certainly, he would feel the pain, hurt, suffering, and torture if being in the cage? Animals are equally precious and should equally share God’s earth and should not be caged at all. They should be in the wilderness with their families. Animals should live in their natural habitat and be allowed to roam freely because animals’ natural instincts will vanish if they are caged in zoos. Also, some animals are forced to live in climates that they are not accustomed to and this is cruel. For example, the elephant is accustomed to live in tropical climates but is forced to live in zoos in cold countries like Canada. Additionally, animals are physically and mentally healthier in the wild than in zoos. They are able to have more exercise as they can run around and hunt in larger land spaces in the wilderness. Zoos do not have such large spaces. Caged animals do not know what it is to naturally hunt their food or to explore their environment and to select a mate. Also not being able to climb, hunt and run will make the animals obese. In the wild animals are able to eat their natural foods instead of artificial foods given in some zoos. And these unnatural foods make the animals sick. Besides, it is not morally and ethically right to deprive someone of the right of living in their own home. Forests and their other habitats are the natural home of animals. We must let them live there. We must follow the precept of ‘Live and let live others’ conscientiously. So I conclude my speech by reasserting that animals should not be kept in zoos.

Zoos are both necessary and as unnecessary. The reasons in favor are more than its opposite idea. That’s why the number of zoos are increasing throughout the world. Day-by-day the number of many species is decreasing rapidly. So, zoos are important to protect and conserve them. Many species of wild animals have already become extinct. Animals too are very important for this earth and needed to be taken care of. There are many reasons to say that there are no apparent alternatives of zoos in the current scenario.
