Herbivores get energy by eating plants. Plants get energy from sunlight. Why does most of the energy captured by plants never become available to herbivores? The herbivores find alternate sources of energy. The plants also provide energy directly to carnivores. The plants use most of their energy to maintain themselves. The herbivores conserve the energy in plants for future generations.
