Given :  here are 4 qualifying examinations to enter into IIMs; CAT, BAT, SAT and PAT. an IITian can not go to IIMs through BAT or SAT. A CA on the other hand can go to theiims through the CAT, BAT and PAT but not through SAT. further there are 3 ways to became CA(viz.foundation, inter and final).

To Find : the ratio of number of ways in which an IITian can make it to IIM to the number of ways a CA can make it to the IIMs

Solution:

an IITian can not go to IIMs through BAT or SAT

s he can go through CAT  & PAT

Hence there are two 2  ways an IITian  go to IIMs

A CA  can go to the  IIMs through the CAT, BAT and PAT

There are 3 Ways to go    ( as he is already CA - How does not matter)

ratio of number of ways in which an IITian can make it to IIM to the number of ways a CA can make it to the IIMs

= 2 : 3

But if we consider the ways of becoming CA also

A CA  can become by 3 ways  foundation, inter and final

Total Ways for a person to go via CA  the  IIMs  = 3 * 3 = 9

ratio of number of ways in which an IITian can make it to IIM to the number of ways via  CA can make it to the IIMs

= 2 : 9

Answer:

5 : 3

Step-by-step explanation:

My solution is a bit for thinkers!

Understand, there are 2 types of people

1. Engineer & 2. CA

Now Engineer can to IIM using 2 exams (PAT / CAT)

Further a person can become CA in 3 ways (foundation / inter / Final)

CA can go to IIM using 3 exams (CAT / BAT / PAT)

For engineers -> IIM -> options are :

( PAT/CAT/ {(foundation / inter / Final) + BAT} ) -> Total 5 ways

For CA -> IIM -> options are :

(CAT / BAT / PAT)

Answer is 5 : 3

I don't understand why the question setter is thinking that the engineer cannot become CA and then go to IIM and design the solution (May be he is afraid of giving CA Examinations)

Even there are no constraints in the question that a person cannot do 2 courses. The question is all about, how to go to IIM. That's it!
