Here are different opinions about what made India a democracy. How much importance would you give to each of these factors?
(a) Democracy in India is a gift of the British rulers. We received training to work with representative legislative institutions under the British rule.
(b) Freedom struggle challenged the colonial exploitation and denial of different freedoms to Indians. Free India could not be anything but democratic.
(c) We are lucky to have leaders who had democratic convictions. The denial of democracy in several other newly independent countries shows the important role of these leaders.

(a) People of India fought a  long struggle and made many sacrifices to get freedom from the British rule. The Indians while controlling legislative institutions gained a lot of training and set up its own rule.

(b) The struggle for Freedom  against colonial exploitation had made a country to contribute a lot to make it a democratic country.

(c) In making the country democratic we are lucky that we have such eminent leaders. As they are the most important factor in making India a democratic country. Also in many countries there are no such leaders and which in turn makes the country undemocratic.
