The Xbox series theme colour has always been green as seen from the original Xbox logo and the game packaging. Certain Xbox One games will also run on Windows 10 if optimised for the platform and the Xbox controller is pretty much the standard for gaming on Windows PC.
Practically none of that applies for Playstation. Originally intended to be a co-production between Nintendo and Sony, issues between the two companies and Philips caused Sony to leave Nintendo and release the first Playstation in 1994. There are four main iterations of the console, simply called the Playstation, Playstation 2 (2000), 3 (2006) and 4 (2013).
I don’t know if Sony consciously intended the Playstation to be an all-round entertainment console like the Xbox, but from the PS3, there have been streaming services and video on demand available.
The latest Playstation 4’s theme colour is blue, as seen from the game packaging, the power light and the default home screen colour. The PS4 controller can be used as a gamepad to play on PC but I’ve read that it requires special software to do so.
Games-wise, there are a lot of cross-platform titles like Battlefield, Call Of Duty, Grand Theft Auto and Wolfenstein, but each console does have exclusives that aren’t available on the other platform or Windows (maybe).
Xbox exclusives include Crackdown, Forza and the Halo series; Playstation exclusives include Dead Or Alive Xtreme 3, Horizon Zero Dawn, Killzone and the Uncharted series. I may be wrong but it looks like a lot of Japanese games are on Playstation rather than Xbox.Note the Playstation 4’s blue theme, vertical orientation (you can put all three iterations of the PS4 vertically, as opposed to two out of three Xbox Ones) and different controller.
Oh, yes: the Playstation 4 is designed so that the customer can easily replace the standard 500GB hard drive with another hard drive of his choice, something you can’t do with the Xbox One. However, both consoles support external hard drives.
If the OP is a parent whose child wants one of those consoles… well, in this day and age it’s impossible to mistake one for the other. Just make sure which one it is; don’t tell the poor shop assistant you want an “X-station” or something like that.
