The ordeal

No one rented the lodges at that time and the year was almost to a dead end. His job was pretty sweet. All he did, he loved it. Darpan's visits to places were related to business in small towns in the borders of Gujrat. Every time, his route would take him through the most audacious rides. Occasionally, Darpan had to stay with some vagrants and a few teenagers, who sometimes would steal a few things, which used to always put Darpan in a situation to regret it. Being a grown-up man of thirty-five, it didn't suit him to bumble with these teenagers. To his visit this time, he decided to rather stay awake all night and keep an eye. He supposed to open up his belongings and check if everything looked secure, but as usual, he was late for the night ride. his cab was waiting in the venue, and he had to make it really fast. He ignored most of the things, and he towered up his belongings anyhow to make it fast. The sky was dark and it seemed all it needed was a calm sleep. Darpan hurried up with his belongings and pulled out a chair in the dining room, and rested it there. He made himself a hot coffee and carried a few in a thermos, after all, the plan was to stay awake all night. And again he hurried to the cab.

When he reached the cab, he noticed many unusual things there. First, already one passenger was there in the cab, and the door was open. He didn't mind much and started with the ride. From here, he had to catch a bus, to reach his destination. As the cab moved, dozens of stars waved him in the night sky. The passenger was aged, more than sixty-five. Nobody knew where his destination was up to. just those old wrinkled eyes were shutting slowly and used to open up again as if they had restrictions to rest. Darpan was noticing this old man for a long time. It was him, who carried a huge thermos with coffee. He made a cup ready, for the next time he restricts his eyes to close. Again in the next few in.stants, those eyes again went insane, fighting for rest. He gently poked the old man, with a made-up coffee in his hand and offered him some. The old man, straight away said no to it.

Finally, the destination for Darpan arrived. And the same old man, landed with his wavering leg, tumbled a bit to left, and bit to right but managed to curb himself. He offered the payment of the cab to the driver. But to his misfortune, the cab driver was no more accepting cash for night rides. He had to make online payments. To this, the old man argued a lot, “we have been visiting for the past twelve years, this never happened and now you want an online payment? How can | possibly do that?" Darpan being a kind man, tried to help him, and said: "chacha, don't worry, | will make the payment for you, you may pay the cash to me." The old man agreed on this fair deal and it was all sorted. This incident raised a bit of trust for Darpan in the eyes of that old man. The bus was not much crowded, and it was slowly emptying.

Darpan initiated a conversation, he asked "Where will you stop?" The old man smiled and said, "to my village." Darpan nodded and said, "it's going to be a long ride, would you like to have some coffee to stay active?" The old man replied with concern that "All I want is to reach my home safely, how can I trust a man offering a cup of coffee in a night ride on a bus?" Darpan laughed and said "So you think I want to hack you and carry everything you have? No problem, I will have the coffee along with you." He nodded.

Sipping, they exchanged facts about their professions. It turned out that the old man happens to be an old retired mathematics home tutor. He said, "after retirement, I have been living in a penitentiary like a rented house, which has just one room, with a bedroom and kitchen attached to it." This reminded Darpan of his lodges, which were still on rent. He quickly turned up features of his lodges to the old man, and he was pretty impressed. The cost of lodges was too low since it was the end of the year, which brought up the deep interest for the lodge.

Now, the night had started to turn dark. The bus was getting sudden hauls and pulls as the trip was all between mountains. Darpan questioned, "Why do you like villages?" The old man laughed and answered "Well, it wasn't before. Do you know? as a student, I was always decent. Our village was famous for the husbandry of mangoes. These mangoes used to get exported to foreign countries, in a bulky percentage. They were honestly of high quality, juicy, and tasty. Once, I was riding my bike home and Siddharth started chasing me from behind. They anyhow stopped and told me about their plan, of stealing those mangoes. They insisted on telling me that we may get a hefty amount of money if we sell them in cities. I was sightless. It was decided that I and Siddharth would invade. And the expected happened. We were caught. Those incidents turned out hilarious for me later."

Darpan smiled and the night scooted out turning to an orange-bleak sky.
