Here is a study of the costly and disruptive problem of absenteeism in an organisation. The study (1986) was conducted in the Prince William Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, where prior to this time, few active steps had been taken to measure, understand or manage the occurrence of absenteeism. Most of the nurses in the group selected for the study assumed that there was no reward or recognition for not utilising the paid sick leave which was a part of their employment conditions. Most workers thought that sick leave is their right, like the annual holiday leave. Miller and Norton, in their survey of 865 nurses, found that 73 per cent felt that they should be rewarded for not taking sick leave, because some employees always used their sick leave. In another study by Bycio and Guion (1989), the most frequent reason stated for absence was minor illness to self. Other causes, in decreasing order of frequency, were illness in the family, family social function, work to do at home and bereavement.
