Here is some record keeping from a coffee shop about their paper cups. Cups are delivered 2,000 at a time.
Monday:+2,000
Tuesday:-125
Wednesday:-127
Thursday:+1,719
Friday:-356
Saturday:782
Sunday:0
Explain what a positive and negative number means in this situation.
Assume the starting amount of coffee cups is 0. How many paper cups are left at the end of the week?
How many cups do you think were used on Thursday? Explain how you know.

Step-by-step explanation:

(disclaimer: I have no idea if this answer is correct, it's just what I think. It might be wrong so keep that in mind!)

I believe the positive sign shows how many cups they have got at the moment. For example, on Monday they have 2000 because they were just delivered, while on Thursday they have 1719 because that is how many cups they have left at the end of that day.

The negative sign indicates how many cups were used that day. For example, on Tuesday 125 cups were used, since it is minus the initial value.

If the end of the week is Saturday in this case, then 1218 cups were left, because:

You start with 2000, then 782 cups were used.

2000 - 782 = 1218

This means 1218 cups were left at the end of the week.

281 cups were used on Thursday, because you start with 2000 cups, then you are left with 1719, since:

2000 - 1719 = 281

This means 281 cups were used on Thursday.
