Heading best seller lists in England -- heralded here as a book for wide sales. It is a good story of a late Victorian couple with actually nothing in common but their acceptance of the dictates of their traditions. A story of marriage:-especially the story of Hester, who went with John as faithful companion, controlled the situation when their marriage was threatened by John's infatuation for Brenda, and survived John's murder before her eyes, through her valiant spirit. One sometimes feels that the story is overburdened with detail, slow paced, heavy, perhaps. But -- in the ranks of English ""family novels"" it stands out.
