India is a large country in terms of population and area. It has a variety of religions, castes, languages which need some seperate laws. The constitution learnt and borrowed provisions from the constitutions of France, US, Britain, and modfied them .The constitution declares India a sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic republic, assuring its citizens justice, equality and liberty, and endeavours to promote fraternity.

Answer:

There was no universal adult franchise at that time. So, the Constituent Assembly could not have been chosen directly by all the people of India. It was elected mainly by the members of existing Provincial Legislatures. This ensured a fair geographical share of members from all the regions of the country.
