The folk who had put up the roadside stand pleaded to the city dwellers to stop and buy their wares so as to enable them to earn some extra money for a decent living. They wanted that the rich people who passed from there in their cars should stop there and buy some goods from them.

The purpose behind erecting the roadside stand is to earn some livelihood. The owner of the roadside stand has put certain articles on sale to earn money. The passersby in their cars speed past the stand.  They do not stop there to buy anything from them. The few who stop, do it either to back the car, or to enquire about farmer's wages, or to ask if they have a gallon of gas. Thus the owner’s desire to earn money remains unfulfilled.
