Question :

A block of mass 5kg hung from ceiling by spring (k = 10N/cm), Find elongation in the spring. ____________________________

Given :

▪ Mass of block (mg) = 5kg

▪ Spring constant (k) = 10N/cm

To Find :

▪ Elongation in the spring.

Concept :

Condition - I :

For mean position of block, we can apply concept of Force equilibrium.

Condition - II :

For extreme position of block, we can apply concept of energy conservation.

Calculation :

Condition - I :

\dashrightarrow\bf\:Spring\:force=Weight\:Force\\ \\ \dashrightarrow\sf\:kx=mg\\ \\ \dashrightarrow\sf\:x=\dfrac{mg}{k}\\ \\ \dashrightarrow\sf\:x=\dfrac{5\times 10}{10}\\ \\ \dashrightarrow\underline{\boxed{\bf{\red{x_{mean}=5cm}}}}

Condition - II :

\Rightarrow\bf\:Spring\:PE=Gravitational\:PE\\ \\ \Rightarrow\sf\:\dfrac{1}{2}kx^2=mgx\\ \\ \Rightarrow\sf\:x=\dfrac{2mg}{k}\\ \\ \Rightarrow\sf\:x=2x_{mean}\\ \\ \Rightarrow\sf\:x=2\times 5\\ \\ \Rightarrow\underline{\boxed{\bf{\purple{x_{extreme}=10cm}}}}
