Hershey and Chase experiment was based on the principle that when a virus attacks a bacteria, it transfers its genetic material to transform the host.

  • The genetic material was founded by Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase.
  • They used radioactively labeled bacteriophages.
  • Some viruses had radioactive phosphorus while others had radioactive sulfur.
  • When these viruses attacked E.coli they transferred their genetic material to control the host bacteria.
  • When the bacterias were centrifuged, only radioactive phosphorus was detected and no traces of sulfur were found.
  • Phosphorus is present only in DNA and sulfur is present only in proteins.
  • Thus, it was concluded that DNA was transferred to bacteria.
