Heterotrophs are animals hat feed on other plants and animals for their survival. In a food chain, fist comes the autotrophs which prepare their own food, followed by heterotrophs. So, the level of heteroptrophs in a food chain is secondary. Their survival without the primary organisms (autotrophs) is not possible.
