Most autotrophs make their "food" through photosynthesis using the energy of the sun. Heterotrophs cannot make their own food, so they must eat or absorb it. Chemosynthesis is used to produce food using the chemical energy stored in inorganic molecules.
Living organisms, such as the green plants obtain their energy from sunlight and use it to synthesize organic material (carbohydrates) from the simple inorganic substances (carbon dioxide and water) available in nature. They are called phototrophs.
However, heterotrophs such as animals are dependent on complex organic substances for nutrition because they cannot synthesize their own food.
