Earlier, circular cells were used for radio coverage but it failed to connect all the towers and there is a gap between the circles. That created a hollow and there seemed to be less radio activity.

Then came the square cells for radio coverage but it too failed as the distance was not the same in all directions.

But, hexagon shapes has the same distance anywhere and everywhere so the radio coverage is better here.
