The main function of the earth wire is to prevent live wire from overloading and absorbs the excess electrons & flows to beneath the ground . It is necessary because it prevents the electrical appliances from damage and absorbs the excess electricity from appliances.

Sometimes when the live wire accidentally comes in contact with the neutral wire the body of the appliance for example let’s take a refrigerator , when touched results in a sudden shock .
Therefore when earth wire is used in domestic circuit a process called earthing of wire is done so when we touch it even if live and neutral wire are in contact we won’t get a shock and the electricity goes to the earth
