Here is a trick for getting the square of a number.

Suppose you want square of 94.


Write the square of 4

=> 16

Now square of 9

=> 81

Write them together

=> 8116

Now multiply 9 × 4

= 36

Double it

= 72

Add it to the number obtained earlier, leaving the one's place

=>
$\: \: 8116 \\ + 72 \\ \\ = 8836$


Hence, square of 94 is 8836.


Another example

91

1² = 1

Write it as 01

=> 01

9² = 81

=> 8101

Now 9 × 1

= 9

Double it

= 18

Add it while leaving the one's place

=>
$\: \: 8101 \\ + 18 \\ \\ = 8281$
91² = 8281.
