1 A compound X is used for drinking. has pH =7 lits acidified solution
undergoes decomposition in presence of electricity to produce gases Y and Z The
volume of Y is double than Z Y is highly combustibl whereas Z is supporter of combustion

X = water [ H2O ]

Y = Hdrogen [ H2 ]

Z = Oxygen [ O2 ]

Chemical reaction:

2H20 ------> 2H2 + O2

(in presence of electricity/ electric current)

Q. Why the amount of Hydrogen evolved is double the amount of Oxygen ?

A. In water, that is \sf H_2 O , there are two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen in a molecule of water. Thus upon electrolysis, water molecule breaks into hydrogen and oxygen. Thus, the amount of hydrogen gas collected is always double in amount as compared to the oxygen gas collected .
