Black hole is an extremely dense body that has such a powerful gravitational effect even light cannot escape it.
To understand, the effect of gravity, you must be aware of how gravity works as Einstein explained it. Consider space like a sheet of trampoline which is flat, albeit spatial plane extends till infinity. On a flat trampoline, if i roll a small marble from one side it will cover the surface of trampoline and reach the other end of trampoline in a straight line. There would be no obstruction to the marble and no deviation from its straight path.
Now imagine, I put a heavy bowling ball at the center of trampoline. You will notice that the trampoline sheet stretches down and bends below the bowling ball. Now, you bring the same marble that you rolled earlier. If you roll the marble with sufficient energy, it will reach the other end, but not in a a straight path. It will follow the curvature of bend caused by bowling ball, take a little curve around the bowling ball and deviate from its straight path.
This is how gravity works. The Sun, for example, bends the space around it in similar fashion (its called warping of space). So, planets are like marbles and Sun is like bowling ball. The planets are stuck in the curvature of the bend created by wraping of space. Just as marble took a curved path on trampoline, planets are also in a perpetual curved path around Sun. The reason planets don't escape from this curved is because of fine balance of mixture of many other forces, though gravity is the prime reason that planets are bound to orbit around Sun's curvature.
Keep in mind that this curvature is what we mean by gravitational effect. Just as planets and other bodies are bound to stars due to this effect, so is energy/photons. They also bend and curve around this curvature. The more the mass, more the warping of space. More the warping, more bound are object/energy that fall into the influence of this warpping (or gravity).
In a black hole, the density is so much, there arrives a conditions called singularity. Singularity is condition when density inside a black hole becomes infinite (black-hole singularity). In physics, anything that has infinite value is absurd. But blackhole is an exception (so far). Inside a blackhole, singularity develops which makes center of its mass infinitely heavy [Density = mass/volume]. Infinite mass means the curvature of space bends so much that anything that falls into it can't come out. Imagine it like an infinitely deep tunnel from which you can't escape. Even speed of light, that is the highest speed that can be achieved in universe, is not enough.
So whatever falls into black hole is lost forever. There is not enough energy in anything that can overcome extremely twisted, singular space warp created by a black hole.
