At the end of the reign of terror the National Convention drew up a new republican Constitution for France. The new constitution was known as the Directory. France was under the directory between 1795 and 1799.
The foreign policy of France under the Directory was directed against European powers like Britian, Austria, Sardinia, etc. In fact, the Directory was fortunate in having the services of Napoleon Bonaparte as a military officer. The Directory appointed Napoleon as the commander of the army in the Italian Campaign(1796). The appointment of Napoleon as the commander, however, was not without reason. For, he had already given proof of his ability by the expulsion of the British away from Toulon(1793). Incidentally, this was the first military success of Napoleon. Another event that helped the rise of Napoleon was the incident of 5 October 1795. On that day the very existence of the National Convention was threatened by an uprising of the Parisian mob. The in the French history is known as the 13th Vendemiaire. However, Napoleon with soldiers repulsed the mob and thus saved the National Convention.
This earned Napoleon the reputation as a friend of law and order and the Protector of the National Convention.
The next step in the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte was the display of his skills in moving troops rapidly against the Austrians. He was also successful winning victory over anti-France power of Europe in one Battle after another and forced them to make peace.
Meanwhile the directory administration in France had been fast becoming unpopular. The directors failed to satisfy the aspirations of the people. After his return to Paris in 1799 Napoleon carefully assessed the situation. Taking advantage of the unpopularity of the directory administration Napoleon joined hands with the section of the directors to overthrough it. Ultimately by a military coup(removal of government by force) Napoleon seized the administration of France on 9 November 1799 this event is known as the 18th Brumaire.
