I have 4 points
-Mercury is the heaviest liquid at room temperature. Thus, a short length of mercury can counter balance the normal atmospheric pressure
-mercury does not vaporize under vacuum conditions hence we can record true atmospheric pressure
-mercury does not wet the sides of the glass tube and helps in recording true atmospheric pressure
-mercury can be had in pure state easily. Furthermore, it is easily seen in glass tube

hey!!!

1) Mercury is used because it's a liquid and is heavy.
2) It doesn't evaporate very quickly.
3) It doesn't adhere to the glass surface of the barometer unlike water and other liquids.
4) It has high density means the height of the column can be a reasonable size to measure the atmospheric pressure.
5) Mercury doesn't wet the glass of the barometer while water wets the glass of the barometer.
6) Atmospheric pressure can be balanced by the column of mercury.

Hope it helps u!!!...
