Plate tectonics is a scientific theorydescribing the large-scale motion of seven large plates and the movements of a larger number of smaller plates of the Earth's lithosphere, since tectonic processes began on Earth between 3 and 3.5 billion years ago. The model builds on the concept of continental drift, an idea developed during the first decades of the 20th century. The geoscientific community accepted plate-tectonic theory after seafloor spreading was validated in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

SIMPLE ANSWER:- Plate tectonics is the theory that theouter rigid layer of the earth (the lithosphere) is divided into a couple of dozen "plates" that move around across the earth's surface relative to each other, like slabs of ice on a lake.

✴️ it is theory which explains the formation of physical features on the earth according to the theory ,The crust of the earth has been formed out of 7 Major and minor plates .tje stressof plates results in building up of stresses within the plates and the continental rocks above , leading to folding, faulting and volcanic activity.
