A reaction is termed as a 'Substitution' reaction, when a leaving group gets replaced by the attacking nucleophile.

For example,

C₂H₅Cl + aq.KOH → C₂H₅OH + KCl

Among Hydrocarbons, Addition reaction are only given by Alkenes and Alkynes.

Alkanes have only single bonds and even their valency is satisfied so they cannot afford to undergo addition reactions.

So, out of C₃H₈ (Propane) and C₃H₆ (Propene), Only C₃H₆ can undergo addition reaction.

C₃H₆ + HBr  C₃H₇Br

Also, it is known fact that vegetable oil is converted to vegetable ghee using Hydrogenation reaction, which is a type of addition reaction where unsaturated Hydrocarbons such as Alkenes or Alkynes are converted into Alkanes. Example,

C₂H₄ + H₂ → C₂H₆

Here Hydrogenation is done by the addition of Hydrogen in presence of non-reactive metals like Nickel and Platinum.

Hope it helps!!
