Hey dear !!
Here is your answer !!
__________________________________________
♦♦ Valency of an element is defined as the Number of electrons present in outermost shell.
♦♦ Outermost electron shell is known as valence shell.
♦♦ I will explain the concept by taking the example
Hydrogen
Atomic number -1
Electronic configuration -
K L M N
1
Hence it's valency is 1 As it needs 1 electron to complete it's octet.
_________________________________________
Another example -
Sodium
Atomic number - 11
Electronic configuration -
K L M N
2 8 1
Now to complete it's octet it needs to loose one electron.
Hence it's valency is 1
Hope it is satisfactory :-)

Ahoy Trisha46!!
The answer to your query!!
Q)What is VALENCY?
>VALENCY can be simply defined as the combining capacity of any element. Any element's ultimate goal is to be stable and form octet.
For example:-
✔Nitrogen:-
Atomic number of nitrogen is 3
It's electronic configuration can be written as 2,5
Number of valence electrons in Nitrogen is 5
Now, Nitrogen can be stable either by receiving 3 electrons or by losing 5 electrons . But, it is more easy for nitrogen to gain 3 eclectrons then losing 5 electrons.
So,
the VALENCY of Nitrogen becomes 3
(5 as valency can also be used)
Futher more explanation:-
VALENCY can also be defined as the number of Hydrogen atoms which can combine with or replace by one atom of the element.
•Further points u should know to remember about VALENCY.
>>Valence electron
Valence electrons are the numbers of electrons which are present in the last shell(orbit) of the element.
Most of the times the valence electron considered as the VALENCY of the element.
Hope this helps you!
Good day!God bless!
Cheers!
