Calculation:

4 objects each of mass "m" are placed at the 4 vertices of a square.

We will calculate the potential energy of different interactions individually.

1st case:

Objects at a distance "a" (along the edges o the square)

E1 = [G(m)(m)/a ] × 4

=> E1 = 4Gm²/a .........(1)

2nd case:

Objects located at a distance a√2 (along the Diagonal)

E2 = [G(m)(m)/(a√2)] ×2

=> E2 = √2Gm²/a .........(2)

Total Potential Energy

= E1 + E2

= (4 + √2)Gm²/a
