(I) Elastic collision is defined as the collision of two bodies that occurs in such a way that the kinetic energy of the system is conserved, In other words there's no change in kinetic energy. The value of coefficient of restitution for a perfectly elastic collision is 1. Example of a perfectly elastic collision is the collision between Ideal gases.

(II) Inelastic collision is defined as the collision of two bodies that occurs in such a way that some of the kinetic energy is lost and converted into other forms. The value of coefficient of restitution for a perfectly inelastic collision is 0. An example of perfectly inelastic collision is the collision between two fast moving cars, as some of their kinetic energies is converted into sound and heat energy.
