I am still trying to decode the mysteries of mantras, and though i m still not there yet,  i will try answering with my understanding.

Mantras are basically a collection of powerful words put together in a manner to resonate with our internal energy and the energies of the universe in order to align us. So yes there is definitely a right way and manner of chanting mantras, specific to most of them. But since we lack that kind of depth in our knowledge, we can we good if we keep the following in mind:

Be sure of the right words, pronunciations and meaning of the mantra. Compromising on any of these might nullify the effect.

Keep your mind clear and stop straying in your thoughts as much as possible.

Try to focus on that ultimate energy/deity/God you believe in while chanting.

Chanting aloud is definitely better than chanting within.

Keep in mind the general things that you would while performing any puja/religious rites of any kind.

Morning time is generally the best for chanting... late evenings and nights are generally a no no until for some very specific mantras.

I cant be sure of the exact and accurate benefits of chanting by keeping the above in mind but definitely it cant be negative in any form.

God bless!!
