Answer: ages after 5 years will be 16 and 17.

Step-by-step explanation:

let their present ages be x and y

according to question

x+y=23

x=23-y.............eqn.1

five years ago:(x-5)(y-5)=42

solving this eqn. by factorising  we get

(y+12)(y-11)=0

y+12=0

y=-12...........(age cannot be negative)

so,y=11 and x=23-y=12.

hence there ages after 5 years will be 16 and 17.
